| Habitat for Humanity originated at Koinonia Farm, a Christian community near Americus in Sumter County, Georgia. It was there, in 1968, that Millard Fuller and Dr. Clarence Jordan began to work at practical solutions to the problem of substandard housing. Fuller was a lawyer and businessman, and Jordan was a scholar and farmer.
Koinonia Partners and the Fund for Humanity were established using a no-profit, no-interest approach, and, assisted by numerous volunteer workers, they began building decent housing in Sumter County to replace the dilapidated shacks that dotted the countryside.
The idea was tested by Fuller in Zaire from 1973 to 1976. Within the framework of the Church of Christ of Equator Region, a Fund for Humanity was established and 162 houses were built. In another project, construction of 300 houses was begun.
Subsequently, Habitat for Humanity was set up as a separate non-profit organization to sponsor projects overseas and to establish partnership projects called affiliates in the United States. On Habitat for Humanity International's 25th anniversary, the 100,000th house was completed. Habitat for Humanity is now working in 45 countries worldwide, in all 50 states in the USA, and in 85 counties in North Carolina.
